The Valtellina is welded onto the Alps along the most northern area of Italy, in Lombardy not far from Milan and the famous Lakes District. Here you'll find some of the most exciting and expressive Nebbiolo wines in the world.

Chiavennasca is the name given to the light, aromatic interpretation of Nebbiolo grown here. These are alpine wines, with vineyards growing along perilously steep slopes. Optimism and heroics are needed in equal measure when making wine here.

Giorgio Gianatti bravely takes local winemaking to the extreme. His micro production comes from family owned cliff-dwelling vines he manages and picks by hand in the tiny borgo of Montagna in Valtellina. We're dead-center in the middle of the prized Valtellina Superiore Grumello DOCG zone.

Giorgio's 2009 vintage of Grumello has bright notes of red cherries, strawberries, and summery Italian plums, with an elegance that surprises for a wine at this price point. The finish shows some pleasing spicy notes, with a hint of nutmeg and even a touch of coriander and rose. Giorgio's Grumello is quaffable today but will last for years if you lay some bottles down in your cellar.

I'd pair Giorgio's Grumello with Valtellina pasta dishes like Pizzocchero di Teglio, a buckwheat tagliatelle seasoned with cheese, potatoes, cabbage, sage, and butter that's to die for. It's also fabulous with Bresaola della Valtellina and Bitto cheese if you're thinking about uber-local antipasti. This Grumello is a natural paired with grilled beef and lamb dishes.

This is the best value wine I've found in the Valtellina, and I'm lucky to be able to share Giorgio's beautiful with fellow Nebbiolo fans.
