Ben Ryé (how to say it) is a stunning Zibibbo (think Moscato) dessert wine from the scirocco wind-swept island of Pantelleria off the coast of Sicily.
Donnafugata cultivates the Zibibbo grapes in shallow divots in the ground to protect the plants from the relentless wind found on the island. The heat of the wind tends to dry the grapes, and the harvest starts after the grapes begin to wither and the sugars have concentrated. These sweet, dried grape clusters are then pressed and vinified into a sweet, high-alcohol wine.
Ben Ryé is a brilliant amber in the glass, with intense aromas of dried apricots, peaches, figs & candied orange. On the palate it's all that, with a scrubby herbal Mediterranean note that is characteristic to Pantelleria. While sweet, it's not excessively so, and it has a delicious freshness with good acidity & a long finish that makes it a joy to drink.
Ben Ryé is perfect as a dessert wine all by itself (a so-called “meditation wine”), but it also pairs wonderfully with rich blue-veined cheeses, roasted almonds & hazelnuts. If you're into it, Ben Ryé is divine with foie gras.
Donnafugata has a nice write-up of the 2014 vintage of Ben Ryé on their website, you can find it here.
