2014 Montepulciano from Emidio Pepe? Yes, you read that right — that super-expensive collector’s wine that is ridiculously priced in the US (over $110 for 2010 vintage) is now available here in the US, years before the importer is allowed to bring it over.
These are fresh bottles imported directly from Italy where Emidio Pepe releases wines earlier to a very hungry Italian wine crowd. Now you can join them too, exclusively through Dall’Uva.
At room temperature, the nose is aromatic with dark red fruits like juicy cherries and blackberries. There’s a rustic spiciness with black pepper and a touch of nutmeg, modest tannins and delicious acidity given the cool ripening year. I’d pair this beauty with grilled or pan-fried steaks.
I decant this and wait for at least an hour, it is more rewarding to the nose and palate and much more open.
