Conterno makes powerful Barbera wines that are truly world-class wines. You pay more for these wines than other Barbera wines from the region, and after one taste you'll understand why.
I first tasted this delicious Barbera over a grand dinner at Osteria dell'Arco in Alba. It blew me away, and so began the challenge of getting my hands on bottles for my cellar and to share with friends. Good news: I succeeded.
Unlike Conterno's 2013 masculine vintage, the 2012 Francia is a more refined and delicate Barbera with ripe raspberries, red cherries, blackberries and rich floral notes of roses and carnations. The acidity is superbly balanced with the fruit. This is classy stuff.
You can cellar this one for a while if you'd like, as I expect it to age gracefully. Me? I drink it now, and pair it with Piemontesi dishes like carne cruda (steak tartare), vitello tonnato, agnolotti al plin, or veal pan-braised with Barolo. (I think a trip back to Osteria dell'Arco is in order)
Limited: I limit purchases to 2 bottles per person, otherwise collectors would wipe me out. Sharing is a good thing.

These folks certainly know their stuff. I asked them for suggestions on wineries to visit in Chianti, and they came back with a fantastic list of great places to visit. We had a great time. Bravo!Phil Bloomberg
