Conterno makes powerful Barbera wines that are truly world-class wines. You pay more for these wines than other Barbera wines from the region, and after one taste you’ll understand why.
The 2013 Barbera d’Alba from their Serralunga Francia vineyard is intensely mineral driven, with ripe black cherry, fennel & tobacco, and a touch of smokiness — but what smacks your palate is the kaleidoscope of rich minerality and assertive acidity. It’s delicious, but much more masculine than the 2012 & 2011 Francia vintages.
I’d let this one rest for a few years. The daring and impatient can pop the cork and pair it with something rich and fatty, like an insalata di carne cruda (think steak tartare), lamb stew, grilled veal chops, or even barbecued baby-back ribs.
