Fans of lighter-style Pinot Noir wines will find this Rossese di Dolceaqua red wine quite fascinating.
The finicky Rossese di Dolceacqua grape grows throughout Western Liguria and Provence, but very few bottles of this rare Ligurian red make it to our thirsty shores.
High above the Mediterranean sea near Dolceacqua in Liguria, Maurizio Anfosso dei Mancinei and his family tend the Rossese grapes growing in their Galeae vineyard each year, entirely by hand, in hopes of sufficient harvest for a good vintage. It’s back breaking work during the harvest, and the result of their toil is a genuine gift for us: an earthy, herbal red with delightful aromas and flavors of pie cherries, all with the characteristic salty minerals found in Med wines around these parts.
Maurizio’s wine pairs nicely with firm fleshed fish, like salmon, and is perfect with the Ligurian local dish braised rabbit with olives and pine nuts. It also goes well with tomato-based pasta dishes, and is friendly with grilled pork chops.
