Michael's Notes:
Giovanni D’Orsi and wife Emilia have been producing tiny amounts of red wine (just 1000 cases/year) since 1992 from their casa colonica in the undulating hills outside of Panzano. Giovanni works in the biologico vineyards and manages the wine production, while certified sommelier Emilia warmly welcomes visitors to taste their 2 interesting wines.
Giovanni’s produces his Chianti Classico Riserva (red wine, Sangiovese, 7,000 bottles, €24) in a more elegant international style, with bright red fruits and baking spices resulting from extended aging of 24 months in French oak barrels. He also likes to explore what Merlot can do in the region by blending with Sangiovese in his structured Inversus (red wine, Merlot+Sangiovese, 5,000 bottles, €37). Like his Riserva, there’s lots going on in this wine, with baked red and black fruits, fennel, spices and some green pepper vegetal notes.
Since this is a tiny family operation, you will need to call or email Emilia to arrange a time for a visit. It’s a fun stop on a self-guided wine circuit around Panzano.
