Barbaresco is overshadowed by Gaja and the massive portfolio of Produttori del Barbaresco, but there are some superb smaller producers playing at the same level as the biggies.
Renato at Cantina del Pino knows how to craft some big, beautiful Barbareschi. His Albesani 2011 is elegant, full bodied and bursting with red cherry compote, currants and black plums. On the finish there's a savory minerality that's wonderfully pleasing. This is a tasty Barbaresco at a great price point.
