Accomplished musician turned Etna Rosso maestro Giuseppe Russo cultivates a few hectares of Nerello Mascalese just outside of Passopisciaro on the north slopes of Mount Etna.
His single-vineyard cru San Lorenzo 2013 is extraordinary and bursts with red fruits, like strawberry, cranberry, raspberries, and a grand bouquet of violets on the nose. Pleasing grumbly dark minerals are a hallmark of Etna wines in this area. I love the long, luxurious finish.
Giuseppe's San Lorenzo 2013 is tough to find, since the press has gone wild with accolades (and he won the Gambero Rosso 3 Bicchieri award, to boot). This is tiny-production Etna Rosso at its finest, with just 4,300 bottles made.
I have limited availability of this wine. If you're an Etna Rosso fan, buy now or miss this grand vintage.
Giuseppe is a fascinating man. You can read more about him in Robert Camuto's write-up.
